Connect a mailbox from any provider that supports IMAP and SMTP, so your email campaigns send from that address. Available on: all paid plans. Not included in the 7-day free trial.
A mailbox is an email account you connect to JournoFinder. IMAP lets JournoFinder read replies. SMTP lets it send your emails. JournoFinder tests both with your password before it saves anything.
Before you start
Have these ready:
The email address of the mailbox.
Its password. Many providers, including iCloud, Yahoo and Fastmail, need an app password instead of your normal one. An app password is a separate password your email provider creates for one app.
Providers that cannot use IMAP and SMTP
JournoFinder looks up your address when you stop typing. For the providers in this table, it shows a message under Email address instead:
Provider | What you see | What to do |
Outlook, Hotmail, Microsoft 365 | “Microsoft turned off password sign-in for Outlook, Hotmail and Microsoft 365 mailboxes. Connect with Microsoft instead.” | Click Connect with Microsoft. See Connect a Gmail or Outlook mailbox. |
Proton Mail | “Proton Mail can't be connected. It only allows IMAP through its desktop Bridge app on your own computer, which outside services can't reach.” | Use a different mailbox. |
Gmail | “This is a Google account. Connect with Google instead (faster, no app password), or use an app password.” | Click Connect with Google. Or click use an app password to carry on with IMAP and SMTP. |
For Microsoft and Proton Mail addresses, the Connect mailbox button is turned off.
Connect your mailbox with IMAP and SMTP
In the sidebar, under Outreach, click Campaigns.
Go to the Email Accounts tab.
Click Connect account, then click Other (IMAP / SMTP).
In Email address, enter the address of the mailbox. JournoFinder looks up its server settings. A green tick shows in the field when it finds them.
In Password, enter your app password or your mailbox password.
In Sender name, enter the name journalists should see in the From line.
Click Connect mailbox. The button shows “Testing & connecting…” while JournoFinder tests the password.
JournoFinder shows “Connecting account” for a few seconds. Your mailbox then shows on the Email Accounts tab as “Connected”.
Enter the server settings yourself
If JournoFinder cannot find your provider's settings, you see “We couldn't detect this provider's settings. Check the server details below.” The Advanced server settings section then opens with empty fields.
Find your provider's IMAP and SMTP details in its help pages.
In IMAP host, enter the incoming server, for example “imap.example.com”.
In the Port next to it, keep “993” unless your provider gives a different number.
In SMTP host, enter the outgoing server, for example “smtp.example.com”.
In the Port next to it, keep “587” unless your provider gives a different number.
Click Connect mailbox.
JournoFinder only uses your own settings when both host fields are filled in.
Example: connect an iCloud mailbox
iCloud needs an app password. Your Apple Account must have two-factor authentication turned on.
Sign in at account.apple.com.
Go to Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords.
Create a new app-specific password and copy it.
In JournoFinder, follow the steps in "Connect your mailbox with IMAP and SMTP". Enter your iCloud address and paste the app-specific password in Password.
If the connection test fails
JournoFinder saves nothing when a test fails, so you can try again. It shows a result for “Incoming (IMAP)” and for “Outgoing (SMTP)”. The most common message is:
“The mail server rejected this password. If your provider uses app passwords, make sure you pasted one, not your normal password.”
For the other messages and their fixes, see Fix "That connection didn't complete" when connecting a mailbox.
Limits
The number of mailboxes you can connect depends on your plan. See your limit at Preferences > Limits. See Email Outreach plans and limits.
