Our search works in the same way as a Google search.
The order of the search results is determined by relevance and authority of the outlet. For general searches you will mainly see journalists from US publications, because these outlets are the most authoritative.
UK and Australia
For the the UK and Australia, you can use the location filter to help surface more journalists from these countries, but you still might see journos from other countries - I explain why here.
Appending 'UK' or "Australia" to your search will also work in some situations. For example, "Most popular air bnb's UK".
This trick also works well when you're trying to surface state or city specific journalists.
German Journalists
We also have a filter for Germany. When you select this filter, the results will surface mainly German outlets - but the language you search in matters.
If you search in English, you will get German outlets who publish stories in English, plus some euro specific outlets and some worldwide outlets.
If you search in German, you will surface articles written in German.
Note: we a looking at adding more country filters, so if there is one you would like to see featured, let us know!
Journalists from other countries
At the moment we only have filters for UK, US, AUS, and Germany.
But this doesn't mean you can't find journalists from other countries - there are some tricks you can use to surface articles from other countries.
In this example, we will look at finding German journalists (side note: this example was written before we added the German filter, but you can apply all the techniques to any country).
Here are some tips for surfacing German articles:
If you’re doing more of a reactive style campaign and the news story is specific to Germany, then you can search as normal and it should surface German news outlets (if they’re the ones writing about the story).
Search in the German language.
Use the operator “site:.de’ in the search - this will limit the results to German sites. You can also combine this with searching in German. One thing to note about doing this is that the site operator broadens the search beyond news articles, which may reduce the number of journalists found.
Find related articles yourself from news sites you’re interested in, then paste the links into the bulk upload feature. This is more manual but good if there’s specific news sites you want to target.
Note: If your search surfaces a journalist we don’t have in our system, we will automatically create a profile for them.
Once you have the journalists on a search - you can add them to a media list. If our automatic profile creation didn’t find an email for them, then we will search manually for an email during the media list checks (normally within 24 hours).
If there’s a journalist you want updated ASAP - you can request a manual review via their profile.
If we didn't find a journalist for an article, but you can see one on there, you can request a manual update for that article and we will manually assign the journalist. If there a lot of articles like this in your search, you can reach out to us with the search you are trying to make and we will take a look.
