You can use all the same search operators you can use in Google Search in our tool.

These operators can help you refine your search results and get really specific with the articles that are returned.

You can use as many Boolean operators (e.g OR) as you want. Search modifiers (e.g. site:) are limited to one per search.

Boolean Operators

Boolean operators allow you to combine search terms in various ways.

  • AND: Combines search terms so that each result contains all of the terms. Example: climate change AND renewable energy This will return results that contain both "climate change" and "renewable energy".

  • OR: Finds results that contain either of the search terms. Example: electric cars OR hybrid vehicles This will return results that contain either "electric cars" or "hybrid vehicles" (or both).

  • NOT: Excludes results that contain the specified terms. Example: cryptocurrency NOT bitcoin This will return results about cryptocurrency that don't mention bitcoin.

  • Parentheses: Group terms to create more complex queries. Example: (solar OR wind) AND energy storage This will find results about energy storage in relation to either solar or wind power.

  • Quotation Marks (""): Search for an exact phrase. Example: "artificial intelligence in healthcare" This will return results that contain the exact phrase "artificial intelligence in healthcare".

Search Modifiers

Search modifiers allow you to specify where in a page or document to look for keywords.

  • intitle: Finds pages with specified terms in the title.

    • Without quotes: intitle:breakthrough medical research will matches titles containing these words in any order.

    • With quotes: intitle:"green energy revolution" Matches titles containing this exact phrase.

  • inurl: Finds pages with the specified term in the URL. Example: inurl:technology AI advancements This will return results where "technology" appears in the URL, and the content is about AI advancements.

  • site: Restricts results to a specific website or domain. Example: site:bbc.com climate change initiatives This will return results about climate change initiatives, but only from the BBC website. You can also chose to limit to just a domain such as site:.co.uk.

  • filetype: Finds specific types of files. Example: filetype:pdf "market analysis 2024" This will return PDF files containing the phrase "market analysis 2024".
