If you don’t know where to start with your searching here are three tips to help. You can watch the video, or read the article below.
I also highly recommend you read the guidance on how to search effectively here, as well as in the help articles on Google News search and Article search.
Tip 1: Headline first
Use keyword searches to find headlines similar to the one you expect people will write about your campaign.
For example, if your campaign is about lack of savings, try searching “majority Americans no savings.”
Scroll through the results and jot down any new headlines you come across to search later.
In the example above, I can see two 'new' searches to make straight away.
american retirement savings
american afford house
Next, I would check out relevant journalist profiles to see their recent work.
If one of their articles aligns with your campaign, their past work can help you discover what else reporters in this niche write about.
Let's check out Marc’s recent articles via his profile (you can also check his author pages on the publication's website).
Marc covered a story on “The Easiest and Hardest States to Save Money” a few weeks ago.
This is super related to saving and perfect for running as a new search to discover more potential contacts.
Tip 2: Browse recent news in your niche
... to find recent and relevant stories that you can search for in JournoFinder.
If you have a campaign that tech journalists would be interested in.
Check out the tech sections of a few different news sites and see what stories have made headlines recently.
If you don’t know any tech outlets, use our AI outlet search to find them.
Here I’ve searched tech news, and filtered it to english language national or international outlets with over 10 million visitors.
Spot a related story or a story that every tech reporter seems to be covering on these outlets?
Take that headline and search it on JournoFinder.
Tip 3: Start broad
Broad keyword searches aren’t recommended for effectiveness, but if you have no idea where to start, doing a broad search Google News search can give you some inspiration.
For example, let’s do a broad search for travel news, and have a scroll through to see what topics seem popular / could be good ones to narrow down our search on.
In the first fold I see two potential headlines I can search next:
Thanksgiving travel
'Rich people' dominating travel
